New npm Threat Bypasses Install Script Protections

A malicious npm package that has been downloaded millions of times comes with a new way of spreading the malware that makes it easier to bypass security protections, say researchers with security vendor Checkmarx. Rather than using more common preinstall or postinstall scripts, the bad actors instead created a malicious package – indexed-btree – that […]

Hackers Target Popular arrayref Rust Crate in Supply-Chain Attack

Security researchers are sorting through a complex, stealthy, and fast-moving supply-chain attack aimed at pushing information-stealing malware by compromising the account of the maintainer of multiple Rust crates and introducing four more attacker-owned crates. In addition, researchers with Wiz wrote that there also appears to be overlap with supply chain campaigns run by nation-state actors […]

Critical Flaw in isolated-vm Can Lead to Sandbox Escape, RCE Threat

Developers for years have been using vm2, an open-source Node.js library, to run untrusted JavaScript inside a secure and isolated sandbox environment. It uses Node.js’s built-in modules and JavaScript Proxies and lets developers whitelist particular built-in Node modules or limit what the script can access. During that time, vm2 has been the default for safely […]

LiteLLM Attack Affected 2,500 Companies, 434,000 CI/CD Pipelines: CloudSEK

The massive supply-chain attack that compromised LiteLLM in the spring affected more than 2,500 companies and exposed about 434,000 CI/CD pipelines, with victims ranging from top-tier IT and AI companies to cybersecurity firms, SaaS, and enterprises. It rolled up a lot of victims, but also was a high-profile example of the growing trend of threat […]

‘Flooding Dropper’ Is Hitting npm With a Tidal Wave of Malicious Packages

Threat researchers at Sonatype are warning developers of an expanding campaign that is generating a wide range of npm accounts and dropping small numbers of malicious packages from each one, essentially flooding the zone with a broadly distributed and automated campaign to make it difficult for defenders to keep up. So far, the campaign – […]

Fast-Moving Shai-Hulud Attack Infects npm Packages with 2 Billion Monthly Downloads

Researchers at Aikido Security and Endor Labs are tracking a fast-spreading supply-chain attack that is compromising a wide range of npm software packages that combined have more than 2 billion installs a month and is stealing a wide range of secrets and other information. According to Ilyas Makari, malware researcher with Aikido, the bad actor […]

N. Korea Group Behind Multiple Open Source Supply-Chain Attacks: Amazon

Amazon’s recent report attributing a series of compromises of open source software libraries to a North Korea-backed threat group encapsulates many of the expanding cyber risks increasingly facing developers, from the growing use of generative AI by bad actors and targeting of code repositories to financially focused attacks by nation-state hackers and the abuse of […]

FakeGit Targets AI Coding Agents with Malicious GitHub Repos

Threat actors continue to find new ways to incorporate AI into schemes aimed at luring developers into downloading malware from fake repositories. The latest example involves almost 7,600 malicious GitHub repositories that are being used to distribute a loader and an information-stealer. The FakeGit campaign is nothing new, with Oleg Zaytsev, lead security researcher with […]

Security Risks from AI Coding Agents Expand Beyond the Sandbox: Pillar

AI coding assistants have become an essential part of developers’ work, automating many of the repetitive tasks – think boilerplate coding and scaffolding – that in the past ate up a lot of their time. More jobs can now get done faster. That said, such agents also represent a significant security risk, making developers – […]

‘HalluSquatting’ Compromises AI Coding Agents to Install Malware, Create Botnets

Hallucinations have been an ongoing problem since OpenAI first introduced its ChatGPT chatbot in November 2022, highlighting generative AI’s tendency to generate plausible but false or misleading information and its inability to just say “I don’t know.” They can lead to embarrassing or uncomfortable moments. However, security researchers in Israel have found that the large […]

GhostApproval Flaw Featuring Decades-Old Feature Found in Six AI Coding Tools

A security flaw found in six popular AI coding agents can let attackers abuse a decades-old feature in Unix to trick an AI agent into giving them control of a developer’s system. Researchers with Google-owned Wiz said the vulnerability, dubbed “GhostApproval,” relies on symbolic links – or symlinks – a file system feature that has […]

North Korea Expands the Reach of PolinRider Supply Chain Attack Campaign

The North Korean-sponsored threat groups behind the long-running fake interview scams targeting developers are expanding the PolinRider supply chain campaign that has escalated over the past several months. Reports from cybersecurity vendors Socket and Rescana found that two groups linked to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) have published at least 108 malicious packages […]

Novee Uncovers Cordyceps: The Latest Threat to CI/CD Pipelines

A newly discovered supply chain security flaw is once again putting a spotlight on inherent weaknesses in CI/CD pipelines and the growing interest among cyberthreat actors to exploit them. Security researchers with Novee, an AI penetration testing platform provider, wrote about Cordyceps, an exploitable pattern in the open source supply chain that can allow attackers […]

Mozilla Shows the Danger of Indirect Prompt Injections in AI Coding Agents

A clean GitHub repository that contains no malicious code can launch an attack and fully compromise a developer’s systems by using indirect prompt injections to trick AI-powered coding agents like Anthropic’s Claude Code into taking steps that hand control to attackers and expose a wide range of secrets. In a proof-of-concept (PoC) attack, Mozilla 0DIN […]

Attackers Exploit SimpleHelp Flaw to Steal Info from AI Coding Assistants, Clouds

Threat actors are exploiting a known security flaw in the SimpleHelp remote monitoring and management (RMM) software to drop two previously unknown pieces of malware that can compromise a broad range of systems and steal massive amounts of sensitive data. Researchers with Blackpoint Cyber’s Adversary Pursuit Group said they detected an intrusion in which the […]

Security Flaw in Claude Code Illustrates the Risk of AI in Developer Workflows

AI coding agents are reshaping software development—but they’re also expanding the attack surface. Researchers uncovered a now-patched vulnerability in Anthropic’s Claude Code GitHub Action that could have enabled prompt injection attacks to expose CI/CD secrets, API keys, and credentials. As AI agents gain autonomy in development workflows, organizations must treat untrusted inputs as hostile and rethink CI/CD security models. Natural language is becoming executable code—and attackers know it.

Shai-Hulud Clone ‘Miasma’ Compromises 32 Red Hat npm Packages

The threat group behind the notorious Mini Shai-Hulud worm last month put the complete source code for the malware into a GitHub repository, essentially open sourcing the threat so that other bad actors can create their own variants. GitHub reportedly took down the repository shortly after it appeared, but the damage was already done, with […]
